New Chicken Digs Contest

Hi farm friends, first I want to say thanks to each and every one of you for taking the time to read the last post about my dad. You have no idea how much your comments lifted my spirits and supported me through a difficult week. I am so grateful for all of you.

Life goes on. After the arrival of several new November birds, the farmer and I decided we’d have to have another chicken house. We talked about building a coop, but hadn’t put our plans in motion. In December, we found a  great, pre-manufactured building with the idea of converting it to the new chicken digs.

It took a few weeks to be delivered because of all the bad weather we’ve had-but finally, it arrived. We are in the process of tweaking the inside by building three partitions to keep the breeds separated. And, we’ve also added three individual runs on the back of the building so they can catch bugs, eat worms and try to intimidate each other through the chicken wire.

When the weather warms up, we’ll paint it to match our barn and potting shed-all white with black trim. I’ll also add flower boxes to the windows in anticipation of planting shrubs and flowers around it to pretty it up. I mean, we can’t let our chickens live in a house that our pigs wouldn’t be caught dead in- can we?

Our Little Pig House

However, our little chicken house needs a name and we could use your help coming up with one. No suggestion is a bad one, toss them out and we’ll catch them. We will let the chicken branch determine the official winner and then will have a pretty sign made up to hang on the front porch this spring.

Once the chickens decide, we will have a special gift basket for the winner. So, drink a cup of joe or hot tea and give it a shot. Maybe some of your chickens will have some suggestions, too. Can’t wait to hear.

It’s easy to enter. Just leave a comment on this post with your suggestion. Share it with your friends and I will also include a special gift to be selected randomly with one entry for commenting and one entry for sharing with others (but please let me know when you comment). The winners will be selected at the end of the day, Wednesday, January 26.

Happy weekend all,

Hello Amy:
First I want to let you know, I tried leaving you a comment about your dad, but the comment box wouldn't load. However, I wanted to
tell you that I was most deeply moved by your tribute to him, a loving, gentle, and kind man devoted to his family and it shows.
Today is the 22nd anniversary of my dad's passing, a young man age 58, taken much too soon.
I miss him with a passion, and keep his memories tucked away in my heart, there is not a day passes without thinking of him.
{Hugs} to you friend.
Now, I'll be back with a name for your chicken coop :)
It's a lovely one too I might add....

Amy, my mind is just a tad der today!

Will be really cute when you get it painted to look like the rest of the farm.

ah.... Verde's Fancies?

Chris at Red Gate Farm said...

Hey Amy,

It looks fabulous red... but I can see that it would look even better if it matched the barn. Your hens will be so happy in their new home. And the window box idea, well I'm telling ya flat out I'm stealing that idea.

My suggestion is "Coop de Ville".

~Chris

PS I've honored you with a little award, so you you want to wander over to "my place" you can check it out... and I'll understand if ya don't "accept awards" :)

How about "Verde's Roost"? I love the shape of it and it will look wonderful with the window boxes and new paint to match. Amy, I'm sorry about your Dad. He has left some big footprints....:)JP

Carla said...

In keeping with your Spanish name (Verde), how about Casa Gallito (house of the tiny chicken).
I used to think it was Pollo, but found out via my son that Pollo is a cooked chicken.

I am not a jealous person.....but am so jealous of your adorable hen house.....SOOOOO CUTE! My poor girls!

As far as a name for your little digs.... hubby (meanie) said my suggestion is dumb :( ....but I was going to say "The Little Hen Inn".

Ok- I will try this:
The Pecking Palace, Hen's Haven, The Chickie Chateu, 3 Clucks Inn, or the Speckled Egg B&B.
Can't wait to see it all finished and what name you pick. I know if I were a chicken, I would want to live there.
Hugs- Tete

Oh my! So many good ideas. Mine is just plain ole "The Hen Pen"

Patrice said...

Princess, our extra large( read-fat) Cornish Rock said you should call it the Chick Cave.

Doc, our Barred Rock said it should be the Poultry Palace.

Ellie, our Buff Orpington said it should be the Clucky Cottage.

None of the above are exactly PhDs and I'm busy trying to name my art studio. The chickens want to know if they can vacation there. They must have read the part about your cottage rental! lol

I forgot to mention how beautiful your new coop is.

Lisa Sall - Sall's Country Life said...

Oh wow, our chickens will be so jealous! Their coop is a real dump compared to this mansion (or compared to their dump this looks like a mansion?) Well, you get my drift. I'm glad you're going to paint to match your farm, I thought the red was a little much compared to the rest of your classy farm! Sall had to walk the 1/2 mile into our farm to check on our abandoned chickens again today. They are all alive yet, but I bet they can't wait till spring! Poor things! Great idea for naming your hen house, I'll keep it in mind! Have a great weekend!

But here goes...
The 3 Clucks Inn.... You know since you will have 3 breeds...
SO is the Verde French or Spanish?.. I learned in High school it was French for green.. but I think it means the same in Spanish...

What a great way to use a prefab shed! I love it and can't wait to see the inside when it's completely finished. I can't think of a single name for the new coop. Well, how 'bout L'il Deuce Coop, or Coop de Grass. LOL I know someone will come up with the perfect theme.

Janet @ My Miniature Donkeys said...

Amy, no name suggestion, but I do have a question. Why do you need to separate the breeds? I'm assuming it's due to aggression. (?)

Verde Farm said...

Hi Janet, we have t separate the breeds because we want to keep them pure. We have silkies and polish and calico cochins and they need to breed together. If we mix them--they will interbreed and lose the purity. Make sense?

Terry Golson said...

My first coop was also a prefab garden shed, retrofitted with a pop door, and divided so we could have storage on one side. I continue to think that they are an affordable and wise solution to getting a coop. I far prefer having a coop that I can stand in than any of the coops currently being sold. Also, they're usually better ventilated. Good job!

I tried and tried to think of a good name and once I started reading everyone's suggestion I just couldn't stop smiling, I love them ALL. I have yet to think of my own but I am working on it :-)

oooo, for a moment there I forgot I wasnt on facebook and I was looking for the "like" button on some of the entries lol!

For some reason, all I could come up with was ~ "the girls dormitory" (the 'girls dorm for short!) lol

Must be the idea that they are going to have their own little sections but still be together, or it could be that i have pre traumatic stress with having college daughters who live together in Missoula - ones a pre-law breed and ones an anthropology breed and I totally can relate to that "intimidation" thang' lol

Hi Amy..the idea you are using with the shed is right smart!!I love the red...but I can see that it needs to cordinate with the other buildings!!

Now for the name..I love all the ideas you have already gotten...boy do you have a hugs task.

I am going for Calico Corners
you could paint a cute calico quilt on the side..and you do raise Calico hens!!

On the funny side...You could add two smaller signs Silkies Hair Salon and Polish Deli. Make it look like a little old General store!

What ever name you choose..I know it will be great! Looking forward to seeing the finished Chick House.

Wouldn't want to ruffle anyones feathers with being left out...lol
