Farm Friend and Farmgirl Friday #8

Hello farm friends, I sure hope you are having a great May. We’ve been so busy and I haven’t been a good blog buddy over the last few months. Last Friday Blogger was down in the morning so I wasn’t able to post Farm Friend Friday. I do apologize for the inconvenience for all of you who wanted to join up. Things are going fine here at Verde Farm but what a difficult spring this has been.

It has been raining for at least 140 days, or so it seems. I’ve considered building the ark and I know we have a good start on the animals we would need to take with us. We started our vegetable garden in April but have yet to fully finish it due to the ongoing weather trials. 3 of our 100 year old trees fell during high wind storms and having those cleared out left a big mess. I will not complain too much though, as those south of here are in a crisis of horrific proportions.

I feel so terrible for the farm communities that are going to be flooded to help the greater good. There is just no good answer to these situations and I can’t imagine what they are facing and hope it isn’t as bad as it could be.

On a positive note, we believe Pansy is pregnant although not 100% sure. She is certainly getting bigger and all signs point in the right direction. We just had 20 baby ducklings this week and they are absolutely precious. If any of you are interested in muscovies, we will be selling these. Some are solid yellow, our first solids, which will turn white as they grow. Their momma has already had them in the pond.

Farm Friend and Farmgirl Friday #4

Hello everyone, can you believe it’s almost Easter? April is flying by so quickly. I’ve been on the road again this week in beautiful Roanoke, Virginia. It was gorgeous and so many trees and spring blooming bulbs to see. I’ve seen very little of Verde Farm lately but I captured a couple of pictures last weekend of my tulips and dogwood trees from our upstairs window. They have been spectacular.

Farmer says he is going to write a few posts to share with you to keep everyone up to date on farm happenings. Until then, a few points of interest:

• Porter has become a man and although he is still much smaller than Pansy, he is in love! Piglets may be a reality in 2011!
• Our calico-cochins are sitting on their first nest, so we will have chicks sometime in the next month.
• Zephyr, the peacock is in full plumage and boy has he found his voice. Chloris, his peahen, is playing “hard to get” and he is not happy and tells everyone about it. Our poor neighbors.
• We have our first weddings officially booked for summer 2011. Can’t wait to share all the plans with you as we get closer. 
• Farmer started his garden this week and built some raised beds for the first time. He painted them periwinkle and they look so pretty. His garden is going to be fantastic. 

So, spring has been good so far and we hope the same for you!

Hi farm friends, hope this week has been good to you! We are finally seeing some spring weather here at Verde Farm. Hoping to mow grass for the first time this weekend, if it doesn’t rain. We will be posting very soon about our kunkune pigs, Pansy and Porter and updating you on their “relationship.” All those tabloid reports that Pansy is pregos are false. Not yet anyway but stay tuned.

Although spring is officially on the calendar, we are still awaiting her arrival. I think spring must be a “her” since it is filled with color, blooms and renewal. Farm Friend Friday #8-Our Shetland Sheep

Hello farm friends, hope you all are enjoying this first few days of spring. I just got home from Philadelphia and old man winter was digging in his heels up there. He even left me with some snow on my car, this morning. It was the same story at Verde Farm, cold with highs in the 30s. Oh well, one thing is for sure, spring weather will soon take care of old man winter, who will certainly need a few months rest.

This week, we want to introduce a couple of our shetland sheep to you--Rain and Burdock. They came to us from Bluff Country Shetlands and Backyard Chickens. We knew we wanted to add sheep last summer but weren’t sure which breed to choose. Nancy Krohn helped us make our decision. She has a wonderful farm for her shetlands and incredible love for this heritage sheep breed.

Shetlands come from Britain and are called a heritage or heirloom breed. According to the Sustainable Table Blog/Website, heritage breeds were raised by farmers in the past, prior to the rise in industrial agriculture that reduced breed variety among many farm animals. In the past 15 years over 190 farm animal breeds have gone extinct, and 1,500 others are at risk. Amazing huh? Many folks don’t realize some farm animals are going extinct, in addition to animals living in the wild.

The rams are wonderful and just the kind of animal we like to have here at Verde. Rain has a latte colored fleece and the sweetest bah you’ve ever heard. Burdock, on the other hand,  has a very dark fleece and sounds like he has been smoking a pack a day for years. Hello doll. They have completely different personalities, but agree on treats, running, playing, lots of love and good scratches. They have both been fixed, so they are wethers. Rams that aren’t fixed don’t make great pets and are much more aggressive.
